#379 - Why we actually have Public Transport? – Society Change! (English)
Hi GuidoFox here! Wonderful that you will read this article ;)
When I ride with my motor scooter in Amsterdam during the day, I see only half empty busses & trams on the road. I am not able to oversee the density of people in the trains in the Netherlands, but it must be the same case. It’s not only about the – let's say 20% fulfillment of the available spots within the vehicle of public transport, but also about the 20% use of the free bus lanes and rails of trams/trains in town – who are not available for other transport vehicles all the day (e.g. cars/scooters/motors). We have to take also in account the travel purposes of users of the public transport: is the purpose really necessary?
I am in favor of metro-systems: they are fast and efficient. But you cannot say that about busses and trams. It’s even the current situation that (slow) busses causes traffic jams with a bunch of cars waiting after them by every stop and trams are blocking easily busy crossroads for a long time.
If we see the costs of public transport, included safety, fare dodging (freeriders), deferred maintenance (costs buildings/vehicles/gates), education & salary employees (bus drivers, etc.) and purchases busses, trams & trains, we have to reconsider our total public transport system.
I am in favor to hold some trains for national and international long distance durational purposes, but the most train stations and train roads could be rebuilt into (huge) parking garages and fast-track highways for cars and motors. The time of trams and busses will be over and the free coming lanes in town will be available for cars/motors/scooters.
It will be a mega transition, but I foresee a financial and time-efficient win. The government has to transfer the saved money from removing the public transport into free/subsidized access to (rental) cars/motors/scooters and Ubers (elderly people).
Freedom has the future!
